Opening Reception & Runway Gala ~ September 16th, 2016

An Adventure in Fashion, Fiction and Fantasy
Curated by Lenita Higgs, Melissa Davis & Sheila Masson

LADYWHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN? The term Steampunk was first used in the late 1980s, but the genre began over 50 years ago and is still going strong in art, film, fashion, and crafting. But what is it, exactly? The movement has been described as “a past that never quite existed,” or “the future as seen through the eyes of the past,” or even “an alternative universe.”

More accurately, Steampunk is an art genre that incorporates science, technology and industrial elements inspired by the 19th-century industrial steam-powered revolution. In addition, Steampunk style often borrows the elements of fashion, culture, art and design from the 19th century’s Victorian era or Wild West period, but also features anachronistic technology or fantasy inventions as people in the 19th cenDRESSFORMtury might have imagined them. Themes from the works of science fiction romance writers Jules Vern(Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) ; H.G. Wells (The Time Machine); and Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) often figure prominently in this style. In whatever art form, this enigmatic, exciting and quirky genre truly invites the artist on a fantastic voyage of imagination and creativity.
