Liberty Arts presents the Box Show
From its humble beginnings as an ancient superstitious naval tradition to the rich, allusive works of artist Joseph Cornell, the shadow box has served as a treasure chest of life’s secrets, mementos, mysteries, dreams, poetic juxtapositions and cherished symbols.
Describing his shadow box process, Cornell once said, “Everything can be used, but of course one doesn’t know it at the time. How does one know what a certain object will tell another.”
Curated by Mo Williams and Rajiv Hotek, the Box Show brings together artists with diverse styles and visions to create a wonderful treasure chest of images.
Mo Williams, Dream Machine
Richard Newman, Artist’s Biography & Mimi Bailey, Beautiful Mess
Rajiv Hotek’s Flotsam & Jetsam is an interactive anchor on this journey of discovery.
Each treasure box in this piece of work is available to purchase for $10.00.
Gallery visitors have the opportunity to hunt for their treasure in the beautifully handmade boxes filled with the Flotsam & Jetsam of various adventures.
Once they find the box that will be theirs we tie a string around the box and the buyers name is placed on the treasure map. Guests will pick up their boxes when the show closes on June 20th.
Marjie Cross’ high school class enjoys browsing the show. To see more students and their work be sure to visit our Explorations page.
