A Spectacle of Fashion, Glamour and Floribunda!
Curators: Melissa Davis and Sheila Masson
French couture made its mark in the 1700s, when designers created lavish gowns and accessories for Queen Marie Antoinette. But the French term “Haute Couture,” meaning ‘high sewing’ or ‘high fashion’ was coined for the creations of Englishman Charles F. Worth in mid-1850’s Paris. Worth’s designs set a standard of quality in high-end fashion with the use of rare, unusual, ornate or heavily-patterned fabrics, sewn with extreme attention to detail, style, and elegance.
These fashions were truly wearable art incorporating draping, tailoring, fabric manipulation, and embroidery to create unique pieces. Worth became the first designer to shift from custom-made clothing to creating elaborate fashion collections and employing young models to present ensembles in a showroom. Thus, “fashion shows” were born.
French leadership in fashion continued into the 19th century influenced by art, architecture, and culture. In 1947, French prestige in fashion reigned with the “New Look” launched by Christian Dior. Glamorous film stars and dignitaries made these iconic styles even more popular. During the next decade, Dior and his contemporaries created a marvelous range of designs with flare, color, and most particularly attitude, with the modern woman in mind. This wildly popular style continued through the early 1960s.
Le Fleur Couture is the fourth wearable-art fashion show at Liberty Arts, capping off the Natural Beauties gallery exhibition featuring botanical illustration, August 11th through September 9th. This exciting fashion show will be an amazing evening of champagne, hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
Fashion designers and textile artists are invited to submit garments and accessories. Those accepted will be presenting their garments and ensembles in the runway show. Designers may enter up to 3 ensembles. (Artists who specialize in accessories are encouraged to collaborate with clothing designers to create complete ensembles.) All entries must be complete ensembles in order to be considered for the show. Entrants may model the ensemble, provide a model or let us provide a model.
